New Zealand have not included Daryl Mitchell in the playing XI for their Champions Trophy 2025 fixture against Bangladesh on Monday (February 24). Here’s why the all-rounder isn’t playing the Group A match.
Playing their second match of the tournament, New Zealand went in with two changes. After captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and elected to field first, he confirmed that Kyle Jamieson is coming in as a replacement for Nathan Smith, while Rachin Ravindra is also back in the side, in place of Mitchell.
Both Mitchell and Smith played the first match but didn’t have much of an impact on New Zealand’s 60-run victory over Pakistan. The all-rounder managed only a run in his side’s first innings, which ended at 320-5, while Smith only bowled two overs during the second innings, going for 20 runs besides picking up Salman Ali Agha.
Santner confirmed that Mitchell’s unavailability was due to an illness.
Ravindra, who missed the curtain-raiser, will be playing his first match in the tournament since the nasty forehead injury during the tri-series against Pakistan and South Africa on February 8.
Kyle Jamieson, meanwhile, makes his international comeback a year after being on the sidelines due to a stress fracture. He replaced an injured Lockie Ferguson in New Zealand’s squad before the start of the tournament.
