Jos Buttler will lead England's 15-man preliminary squad at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 set to be held across Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates in February.
England have had a tough time playing in the Indian subcontinent over the last few years but Jos Buttler's men will be hoping to get over those blues and make a fresh start under the leadership of Brendon McCullum, the new white-ball coach.
Most of the players named in the squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have a wealth of experience playing on pitches in the Indian subcontinent via the Indian Premier League or England’s red-ball and white-ball tours of India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka over the last few years.

The Champions Trophy begins on February 19, and England start their campaign against Ashes rivals Australia at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on 22nd February. Following that, they will play a strong Afghanistan side on February 26 at the same venue.
The action then moves to the National Stadium in Karachi where Buttler’s men will face Temba Bavuma’s South Africa – currently facing an injury headache with fast bowlers Anrich Nortje and Gerald Coetzee out of action for now.
England squad for Champions Trophy: Who's in?
For England, there are multiple changes from the squad that lost 2-1 to West Indies in their most recent ODI series late last year.
Jos Buttler, Jamie Smith, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Mark Wood, and Gus Atkinson all missed that series, but will return for the Champions Trophy. Liam Livingstone will also hand the captaincy back to Buttler who withdrew from the series with injury.
After being named Men’s Young Player of the Year and earning the central contract, Jamie Smith continues to improve his stocks in international cricket and the wicket-keeper batter will be looking to make an impact in the upcoming Champions Trophy.
The pair of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood have also resumed bowling in tandem, joining Rashid, Atkinson, Carse, Overton and Mahmood in what is a strong-looking bowling arsenal for England.
England squad for Champions Trophy: Who's out?
From the West Indies series, the following players make way for the Champions Trophy: Jordan Cox, Michael Pepper, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Jafer Chohan, John Turner, Dan Mousley, Rehan Ahmed, and Reece Topley.
Notably, there is no comeback to ODI cricket for Test skipper Ben Stokes, whose last match in this format came at the 2023 World Cup. Stokes has retired from the format, and recently suffered a hamstring injury in New Zealand.
