England squad for Champions Trophy

England have announced their squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy, with Jos Buttler named as captain.

The most notable inclusion is of Joe Root, who hasn’t played an ODI since England’s group-stage exit in the World Cup last year. Root struggled for form, managing just 276 runs at an average of 30.66 as England failed to defend their title with three victories from nine games.

However, there’s no comeback for England Test captain Ben Stokes, whose last ODI also came a year ago in the same tournament. Stokes had previously retired from ODI citing burnout and withdrew from this year’s T20 World Cup to recover from a recurring knee injury. He recently sustained a hamstring injury during the Hamiton Test against New Zealand, his second in the space of five months.

Warwickshire all-rounder Jacob Bethell’s rise in his nascent international career earned him a spot. Having received a contract upgrade from the England Cricket Board after an impressive white-ball debut against Australia in September, Bethell’s surprise audition at No.3 in the recently concluded New Zealand Tests turned out to be a success.

Also selected for his impressive start to his Test career is wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith, who missed the New Zealand Test series due to the birth of his child.

England's pace battery comprises Mark Wood, Saqib Mahmood, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse, while Adil Rashid has been selected as the only frontline spinner, with support from Bethell and Liam Livingstone.

The same squad will play a three-match ODI series in India, starting from February 6.
