England quick Brydon Carse is set to miss the team’s Champions Trophy clash against Afghanistan on Wednesday. His participation for the rest of the tournament is also in doubt.
Carse has been struggling with a blister on the toe of his left foot, one that needed stitches during the India ODIs earlier this month. He missed England's final ODIs, as a result.
The injury seemingly became an issue again for Carse during England’s defeat to Australia on Saturday. He bowled seven overs in the game, ending with 1-69 as the opposition chased down the biggest target in Champions Trophy history.
He is also in doubt for the remainder of the tournament, with England also scheduled to play South Africa in the group stage. Both games are near must-win matches for the side.
Jamie Overton set to be Carse’s replacement against Afghanistan
England are likely to replace Carse with Overton for the match at the Gaddafi Stadium. Overton has played three games in the format, the most recent being against India at Cuttack. He has picked up three wickets.
England did not pick any travelling reserves for the tournament and will need to call in a replacement if Carse gets ruled out of the Champions Trophy. They could go in for leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, who was previously with the squad in India. His inclusion would provide a second frontline spin option alongside Adil Rashid.
Speaking to the BBCin Lahore, England batter Joe Root remained uncertain about Carse’s availability. "There is still a good way to go until the game, to find exactly what is up with Carsey. We will see how things pan out over the next few days," he said.
Carse has played 21 ODIs for the team, picking up 24 wickets at an average of 39.45. He has played two games this year, grabbing only a wicket, in the clash against Australia.
