Brydon Carse ruled out of Champions Trophy 2025

Leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed has been announced as an injury replacement for Brydon Carse for the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025.

Carse has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy due to a toe blister, which needed stitches during the ODI series against India earlier this month. He played the first ODI of the series, in Nagpur, but missed the other two.

He was part of the team that lost to Australia in their Champions Trophy opener on Saturday, February 22. He sent down seven overs, conceding 69 runs and taking the wicket of Alex Carey.

For their next game at Lahore, Jamie Overton was reported to be the likely replacement for Carse in the playing XI. With the addition of Rehan, they now have a spin option too, although it remains to be seen when he arrives in Pakistan.

Rehan, the 20-year-old spin all-rounder, hasn't played ODIs since the England's tour to the Caribbean in 2023. In six ODIs so far, he's taken 10 wickets at 23.30, with a best of 4-54 against Ireland, and a high score of 15 from four innings, batting between No.8 and 10.

A statement from the ICC read: "The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 has approved Rehan Ahmed as a replacement for Brydon Carse in the England squad.

Ahmed, who has played six ODIs, was named as a replacement after Carse was ruled out due to an injury to the toe.

The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before the player can be officially added to the squad.

The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 consists of Wasim Khan (ICC General Manager – Cricket), Sarah Edgar (ICC Senior Manager - Events), Usman Wahla (PCB Director – International Cricket Operations), Shaun Pollock (Independent Representative)."

Fighting to stay alive in the tournament, England face Afghanistan next on Wednesday, the 26th.
