New Zealand drew first blood in the 2025 Champions Trophy with a dominant victory over reigning champions Pakistan in Karachi. Here's how the result affects the standings.
The hosts were on the back foot after New Zealand posted them 321 to chase. After they were in trouble early, reduced to 73-3 after early strikes by Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed, Will Young and Tom Latham both hit centuries in a strong recovery. Latham's hundred was his fifth in ODI cricket when batting at No.5, putting him second on the all-time list of most centuries scored in that position in men's ODIs.
With a quick-fire half-century at the end of the innings from Glenn Phillips, Pakistan were facing a big total by the end of the innings. Their chances of a successful chase were hampered early on with Fakhar Zaman unable to open the innings after spending time off the field to receive treatment for an injury. Instead, Saud Shakeel was promoted to open and was dismissed for a 19-ball six. Captain Mohammad Rizwan was then dismissed by a brilliant catch by Phillips for a 14-ball 3, and Fakhar, batting at No.4, was dismissed for 24 off 41 balls.

Babar Azam was the only member of the top-order to cross 50, scoring 64 off 90 balls with the required run-rate climbing throughout his innings. Khushdil Shah provided some lower-order resistance, top-scoring with a 49-ball 69 before he was dismissed by Michael Bracewell.
Naseem Shah was the final wicket to fall, sealing Pakistan's defeat by 60 runs, and putting them bottom of Group A, and with a significant dent to their Net Run Rate, after only one match.
