India got off to a winning start in the Champions Trophy with a six-wicket win over Bangladesh in their tournament opener in Dubai.
Shubman Gill scored a second consecutive ton in the format as India chased down 229 runs with 21 balls to spare. It's the fourth consecutive 50 plus score Gill has made in ODIs, after scoring 87, 60 and 122 in each innings against England. He also scored a century in his previous professional innings before that, in a Ranji Trophy match for Punjab vs Karnataka – making it a total of three centuries in his last five innings.
Earlier in the game, Mohammed Shami got India off to a blistering start, dismissing Soumya Sarkar with the sixth ball of the match. Bangladesh were then reduced to 35-5 after Axar Patel took two wickets in two balls. Shami claimed his sixth ODI five-for later in the innings, and despite a record sixth-wicket partnership between Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy, Bangladesh were bowled out for 228.
Despite the big win, India have not gone straight to the top of Group A. They are currently sitting in second place behind New Zealand, whose NRR shot to +1.200 with a 60-run win over Pakistan yesterday (February 19).
Pakistan are still at the bottom of the table, with their run rate significantly less than Bangladesh.
India's next match will be the much anticipated clash against Pakistan, which will take place on Sunday (February 23).
