An Australia all-rounder who was selected for the Champions Trophy has announced his retirement from ODIs with immediate effect.
Australia have been hit by a host of issues with their Champions Trophy squad. Mitchell Marsh was the first to be ruled out of the tournament due to an injury, after which head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed that Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are also doubtful starters, nursing injuries of their own.
If that wasn't enough, the defending World Champions have been hit by another major blow as one of the members selected in the provisional squad has announced his retirement from the format altogether.
Marcus Stoinis retires from ODIs
Stoinis, 35 years of age, has announced that he is retiring from ODIs with immediate effect, meaning he will take no part in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
"Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold," Stoinis said in a statement. "Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish.
“This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Andrew McDonald) and I’ve hugely appreciated his support. I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan.”
Australia will have to name a replacement for Stoinis in the Champions Trophy squad. The selection panel will confirm the final squad for the event after the conclusion of the ongoing Test series in Sri Lanka.
Stoinis retires with 71 ODIs to his name, having scored 1,495 runs at 26.69 with one century and six half-centuries, and having taken 48 wickets at 43.12.
