England put on their highest-ever total in the Champions Trophy in their 2025 tournament opener against Australia today (February 22), with Ben Duckett leading the way with 165. Here's all the records England broke during their innings.
Despite losing Phil Salt early in Lahore, thanks to an outstanding catch from Alex Carey, England piled on the runs. They put on 73 in the powerplay, despite losing two wickets, with Joe Root and Duckett's partnership growing to 158 off 155 balls before Root was trapped lbw by Adam Zampa.
Root's wicket didn't phase Duckett, however, who went on to reach his third ODI century off 94 balls in the 32nd over. As Duckett went through the gears, England lost wickets at regular intervals, with Harry Brook, Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone all out for less than 30. Despite that Duckett passed his previous best score in the format, which was 107, and passed 150 off his 135th ball at the crease. It was the 13th score of 150 or more for England in men's ODI cricket and their first in the Champions Trophy.
Duckett was eventually out in the 48th over of the innings for 165, pinned lbw by Marnus Labuschagne. His score is fifth-highest ever for England in a men's ODI and the third-highest by an opener. It's also the highest individual score in Champions Trophy history, beating Nathan Astle's 145* from 2004, and no England batter has made a higher score in a men's ICC tournament.
Duckett's record as an ODI opener since he took up the position last year now reads 601 runs from nine innings, at an average of 66.77 and a strike rate of 113.82, with two hundreds and three fifties.
England went on to post 351-8, with Jofra Archer slugging two consecutive boundaries in the final over of the innings. The score is the highest ever in the Champions Trophy and their fourth-highest in an ICC men's competition. It's also their second-highest men's ODI total against Australia, with their record-breaking 481 in Nottingham in 2018 still top of the pile.
If Australia successfully chase their 352-run target it will be the highest-ever successful chase in a men's ICC tournament, and the seventh-highest successful chase overall.
