Watch: Faheem Ashraf smashed a 26-ball half-century as Islamabad United completed a stunning heist over Multan Sultans today (March 7, 2023), with the highlight being an audacious ramped six of a wide yorker over third man for six in the final over.
The shot left those watching in awe, with Simon Doull’s open-mouthed reaction in the commentary box summing up the general disbelief at the stroke.
No side had ever hit 18 runs off the final over to win a Pakistan Super League (PSL) game before today, but Faheem’s heroics got his side over the line with a ball to spare.
Even before then, Faheem had done plenty of work, with 46 runs needed off the last three overs chasing 208 to win. Twenty-eight runs came off the next two overs, but Multan Sultans were still favourites as Mohammad Ilyas took the ball.
What followed was extraordinary as the pressure told on Ilyas. First came a ball so wide that, had it pitched before passing the stumps, it would surely have been a no ball. Instead it was just a wide. Next came another wide yorker which Faheem attempted to angle leg-side, only for an under-edge to take the ball past the keeper to fine leg for four.
Multan Sultans captain Mohammad Rizwan attempted to calm Ilyas, seemingly instructing him to bowl the same delivery again. Faheem guessed where the ball would be bowled, but his dexterity in maneuvering the ball over third man for six was still extraordinary. Had he left the ball, it would surely have been a wide.
All of a sudden, Islamabad United needed seven off four balls. Some hard running brought two off the next, and a straight drive became four as Kieron Pollard misfielded on the boundary. The West Indies great was involved again next ball, with Faheem just clearing him to bring up his fifty and seal victory.
