The 2022 edition of the Pakistan Super League has come to an end, with Lahore Qalandars lifting the trophy for the first time after beating Multan Sultans in the final. Here is Wisden’s PSL 2022 Team of the Tournament, an XI made up of the best performers from across the competition.
PSL 2022: Wisden’s Pakistan Super League Team of the Tournament – the selections
Fakhar Zaman – Lahore Qalandars
588 runs @ 45.23, HS: 106, SR: 152.72, 1 hundred, 7 fifties
Fakhar Zaman failed in the Eliminator 2 and the final for Lahore Qalandars, but by then the left-hander had already broken records, registering the highest run tally by any player in a single Pakistan Super League campaign.
Mohammad Rizwan – Multan Sultans (wk)
546 runs @ 68.25, HS: 83*, SR: 126.68, 7 fifties; 7 catches, 2 stumpings
Mohammad Rizwan was prolific again in PSL 2022, topping his PSL 2021 tally, which at the time sat as the second-most runs ever managed by a player in a single edition. In four innings prior to the final, Mohammad Rizwan compiled 263 runs and was dismissed only once. While his strike-rate wasn’t the best, his keeping ensures that he makes it into this XI, with Shan Masood unlucky to miss out.
Shoaib Malik – Peshawar Zalmi
401 runs @ 44.55, HS: 58, SR: 137.32, 3 fifties; 3 wickets @ 24, BBI: 1-2, Econ: 6.54
Shoaib Malik bats at number three in our XI. The veteran proved that age is just a number, though his half-century in the first Eliminator wasn’t quite enough to secure victory over Islamabad United.
Shadab Khan – Islamabad United
268 runs @ 33.50, HS: 91, SR: 162.42; 19 wickets @ 10.89, BBI: 5-28, Econ: 6.46
Shadab Khan was unstoppable with both bat and ball, and was unlucky not to win the Player of the Tournament award. His side failed to make the final after losing to eventual champions Lahore Qalandars in Eliminator 2. Under his stewardship, Islamabad United played aggressive, no-fear cricket that should see them challenge again in years to come.
Tim David – Multan Sultans
278 runs @ 39.71, HS: 71, SR: 194.40, 2 fifties
Tim David was in top form during PSL 2022, though his returns diminished as the tournament progressed. Still, his 29-ball 71 against Islamabad United was one of the highlights of the league, with the blistering knock containing six fours and six sixes.
Harry Brook – Lahore Qalandars
264 runs @ 52.80, HS: 102*, SR: 171.42, 1 hundred
Harry Brook was one of the stars for Lahore Qalandars in their successful campaign, with the England youngster destroying Islamabad United with an unbeaten 49-ball 102 during the league stage. He also played a good hand in the final, his 22-ball 41 helping Lahore Qalandars reach 180.
Khushdil Shah – Multan Sultans
153 runs @ 25.50, HS: 32, SR: 182.14; 16 wickets @ 13.93, BBI: 4-35, Econ: 6.89
Khushdil Shah played the role of the finisher with aplomb while also delivering with the ball. His rise gives Pakistan yet another all-round option at the international level.
David Wiese – Lahore Qalandars
168 runs @ 28.00, HS: 31, SR: 184.61; 9 wickets @ 27.11, BBI: 2-11, Econ: 8.36
David Wiese helped script a successful campaign for Lahore Qalandars with bat, ball and with his leadership, coming to the fore at the end of an innings. This was visible in his two knocks of 28 off 8 in Eliminator 2 and the final. He was also proficient with the ball, as he showed in his brilliant final over against Islamabad United in Eliminator 2, where he ensured a win by the barest of margins. And of course, he also contributed with his data-analysis skills.
Shaheen Shah Afridi – Lahore Qalandars (c)
20 wickets @ 19.70, BBI: 3-30, Econ: 7.57
Shaheen Shah Afridi, now firmly established as Pakistan’s finest bowler, led Lahore Qalandars to their first triumph in the PSL. He was in top form throughout the tournament, and helped provide Lahore Qalandars good starts with the ball.
Zaman Khan – Lahore Qalandars
18 wickets @ 21.50, BBI: 4-16, Econ: 8.26
Assisting Shaheen in his operations was the Malingaesque Pakistan quick, Zaman Khan. The teenaged fast bowler proved to be a game-changer on more than one occasion during the tournament. He was awarded the Emerging Player of the Tournament award at the end of the league.
Imran Tahir – Multan Sultans
16 wickets @ 18.62, BBI: 3-16, Econ: 6.47
We move from the youngest player in this XI to the oldest player. The 42-year old Imran Tahir impressed with the ball and helped contribute to Multan Sultans victories on several occasions.
