Watch: Alex Hales was run out in comical fashion for Islamabad United in their Pakistan Super League match against Quetta Gladiators after surviving LBW appeal from Shahid Afridi.
Facing the Pakistan legend, Hales, who was on 62 off 37 balls at the time, was struck on the pad leading to a loud appeal for LBW. Hales set off for a run despite the ball travelling quickly in the direction of Naseem Shah at short third man.
The umpire was unconvinced by the appeal from Afridi. However by this point Hales was already stranded in the middle of the pitch after Asif Ali at the non-strikers end had shown no interest in the quick single.
As a result, Naseem Shah was left with the simplest of tasks as he gently threw the ball into wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed to complete the run out. Quetta couldn’t believe their luck as Hales was in ominous form having struck four sixes already with half the innings still remaining.
The wicket was part of a dramatic collapse as Islamabad lost four wickets in seven balls to fall from 100-1 at the start of the eleventh over to 102-5 at the start of the twelfth. To make matters worse, Asif was himself dismissed just an over later to leave Islamabad in desperate trouble at 109-6. But a fantastic half century from Faheem Ashraf batting at number eight salvaged the innings and meant United finished their 20 overs on 199-8.
