It has been more than nine years since India had last hosted a women’s Test, against South Africa at Mysuru in 2014/15. They had won that match by an innings and 34 runs.
India will now host England Women at Dr DY Patil Academy in Navi Mumbai from December 14 to 17, 2023.
With 5-44 and 4-41, Harmanpreet Kaur had starred in that Mysuru Test match. She is set to become India’s 12th Test captain, and the first new captain since Mithali Raj in 2005.
In these nine years, India have played two Test matches and drawn both, against England at Bristol in 2021 and against Australia at Carrara in 2021/22. England, on the other hand, have competed in the Women’s Ashes on a regular basis, and have hosted India in 2021 and South Africa in 2022, but they have not won a Test match since Perth 2013/14.
Of the 14 Test matches between the sides, only three were not drawn. England famously won at Jamshedpur in 1995/96 by two runs – still the lowest margin of victory in a women’s Test match, while India won at Taunton in 2006 and at Wormsley in 2014.
England received a setback ahead of the Test match, when leg-spinner Sarah Glenn was ruled out with a fractured thumb she sustained during the second T20I, on December 9. They have drafted in left-arm finger-spinner Kirstie Gordon as replacement.
Ahead of the Test match, England won the three-match T20I series 2-1 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
