Watch: Pakistan debutant Aamer Jamal enjoyed a special T20I debut, defending 14 off the final over against Moeen Ali and England.
Jamal’s wide yorkers were a particular feature, with four of his five balls to Moeen full and wide. The one ball on which Jamal missed his mark, Moeen took full toll, smashing a 91-metre six to bring up his half-century. But the Pakistan newbie won out.
Coming into the final over, Babar Azam faced a tricky decision over who to throw the ball to, with Mohammad Nawaz and Jamal the two bowlers with overs left. While Nawaz is the more experienced, his left-arm spin would have matched up unfavourably with Moeen, and Babar went to Jamal.
The 26-year-old is a relative unknown, with his selection in the squad a surprise. He has played just 12 T20s, going at over nine an over, and has never played a game in the Pakistan Super League. Before the final over, he was given the ball just once, taking a wicket and conceding five runs.
If there were any nerves about being tasked with defending a target in a tight series, they didn’t show. Jamal conceded just eight runs, with Pakistan victorious by six.
“This is such a good effort,” said Mark Butcher on commentary. “What a way to open up your account as an international T20 cricketer. Charged with bowling the last over, charged with having to defend 15 bowling at one of the most destructive batters in world cricket in Moeen Ali, and he has finished the game off in some style. That is a very, very fine over.”
