Needing 343 to win on the final day of the first Test, Pakistan looked to have shut up shop when they scored just 13 runs off the first 13 overs of day five against England’s seamers.
But the introduction of spin saw that all change as Rizwan, along with debutant Saud Shakeel, upped the ante against England’s spinners Will Jacks, Joe Root and Jack Leach.
Pakistan scored at less than one run an over on day five against seam, but that rose to 4.5 against spin, with Jacks going at over a run a ball and Leach going at four an over.
Rizwan hit two sixes in his innings where he went to lunch unbeaten on 42, one off Jacks and another off Leach, the latter a fantastic straight hit that took Pakistan to within 180 of victory.
