Watch: Jack Leach dismissed Naseem Shah during the dying stages of the first Test match between England and Pakistan to help the visitors to their first win in the country after 22 years.
England, who are touring Pakistan for a Test series for the first time in 17 years, registered only their third victory in the land after they clinched the first Test in Rawalpindi, winning by 74 runs. On a track that is in danger of being sanctioned by the ICC after England scored 506-4 on the opening day, Ben Stokes’ team put up a resilient fight after a bold declaration on day four.
In reply to England’s first innings score of 657, Pakistan made 579 and were set a target of 343 to take a series lead after their opponents declared at 264-7. The hosts began strongly and reached 176-3 in 55 overs before the England bowlers bounced back, reducing them to 256-6 when Naseem Shah walked out.
The quick faced 46 balls during his stay at the crease, keeping the match alive despite the fall of wickets at the other end. He, along with Mohammad Ali, faced 53 balls for the tenth wicket, giving hope of a draw as the end of the day’s play neared.
However, it was not to be. Leach, coming on to bowl the 97th over of the innings, started with two dots to Naseem before sliding it down past the batter’s edge. The ball hit the pads as England went up in appeal and the on-field umpire raised his finger. Naseem reviewed immediately but was left distraught as replays showed three reds. He departed for six in 46 deliveries as Leach picked up his fourth wicket of the game.
