Watch: Jack Leach joined the succession of England batters to depart in strange fashion, attempting a switch-hit first ball, missing, and getting bowled.
England have adopted an all-out attack approach in Test cricket, and Leach bought in in spirit if not execution, attempting an expansive stroke first ball only to have his stumps pegged back.
The first seven wickets all fell to Abrar Ahmed, who looked in with a shout of taking all ten wickets on Test debut, which would have been a first. His leg-spin team-mate Zahid Mehmood put paid to those hopes, and threatened a special moment of his own, taking two wickets in two balls.
Ollie Robinson skied in the air, and Leach, to his first ball, switched his stance and attempted to hit through the off- – or is that leg? – side. As it was, he failed to hit it anywhere, missing completely, and was bowled. Mehmood was unable to complete the hat-trick, James Anderson defending his first ball before reverse-sweeping as England continued to attack.
England were bowled out for 281 in 51.4 overs.
