The series will be the first time England have played Test match cricket in Pakistan since 2005, with all three fixtures set to be completed before the New Year. It will be Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum’s first overseas assignment in charge of the side following their successful home summer where they notched up victories over New Zealand, India and South Africa. Keaton Jennings and Ben Duckett have been called up to the squad as potential openers in the place of Alex Lees, while Liam Livingstone and Will Jacks are in line for Test debuts. 18-year-old leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed was added to the squad on November 23, having initially been selected as a net bowler for the tour.
Pakistan last played Test cricket against Sri Lanka in July, the two match series was drawn 1-1. Babar Azam was in prolific form across the series, registering three scores of more than 50 in four innings, including a century in the first match. Shaheen Afridi is missing from the squad for the series after picking up an injury in the T20 World Cup final and undergoing an appendectomy a week later. Haris Rauf will be hoping his impressive performances and high pace in the limited overs formats are enough to earn him a maiden cap, and Mohammad Ali and Abrar Ahmed are new faces in the squad.
The two teams played a seven-match T20I series in September, as part of England’s first leg of the tour. The tourists won the series 4-3.
