New Zealand have named an inexperienced Prime Minister's XI to take on England ahead of the series between the two senior sides, which includes a teenage batting sensation who shot to attention in the U19 World Cup earlier this year.
The match, which starts at the Sir John Davies Oval in Queenstown on Saturday (November 23), will see the PM's side take on the England squad led by Ben Stokes, with the Test series set to begin next week. While such New Zealand XIs are usually referred to a the 'New Zealand XI', the side has been renamed on this occasion to the 'Prime Minister's XI' in honour of New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon attending the match.
The side will be led by Wellington Firebirds batter Troy Johnson, with the rest of the squad made up of younger and inexperienced players from across the New Zealand domestic setup. The most eye-catching of those names is 17-year-old Reddy, a talented batting all-rounder. Reddy first caught attention in the 2024 U19 World Cup, where he scored a memorable 147* off 125 balls against Nepal and finished as New Zealand's highest run-scorer in the competition.
While Reddy has yet to feature in a first-class game, he was involved recently in a New Zealand development squad which faced Otago. He top scored in the first innings of the game with 72 and scored another half-century in the second innings. He also took two wickets in the match with his right-arm off-spin.
New Zealand high-performance coaches Bob Carter and Graeme Aldridge will coach the squad. The two-day game will conclude on Sunday, November 24, with the first Test set to start on Thursday, November 28 at the Hagley Oval.
