The pair had shared nine wickets as England collapsed from 175-3, with Kuldeep Yadav taking five of the first six and R Ashwin mopping up the tail.

Ordinarily, that would make Kuldeep the clear choice to lead the team from the field, but Ashwin is celebrating a milestone Test match, with this game his 100th in the format. Kuldeep gave Ashwin gave the ball first, before Ashwin returned it. Kuldeep attempted to give it back, via Mohammed Siraj.

Eventually, somewhat reluctantly, the left-arm wrist-spinner led India off. Ashwin lightly pushed him forward to encourage him to enjoy the moment.

The performance headlined an excellent series for Kuldeep, who had taken four wickets in each of his three appearances leading into the fifth Test. Ashwin brought up the milestone of 500 wickets during the series, and claimed a match-turning five-for at Ranchi.
