India acquired a first-innings lead of 126 in the third Test of the five-match series, at Rajkot. Shubman Gill joined Yashasvi Jaiswal on the third afternoon and was unbeaten on 65 at stumps as India stretched their lead to 322.
Gill continued on the third morning with Kuldeep Yadav, who had come out as night-watch for the second time in the Test match. The score read 246-2 when Tom Hartley came to bowl the last ball of the 64th over of the innings to Kuldeep.
At this point, Kuldeep decided to take on Ben Stokes at mid-on. He did not time the shot, but the ball fell short of Stokes. Gill had meanwhile set off for a non-existent single, only to be – rightly – sent back by Kuldeep.
Stokes, who had run out Ravindra Jadeja in brilliant fashion in the first Test match, in Hyderabad, threw the ball to Hartley, who took the bails off. Replays revealed that Gill’s full-length dive had fallen short of the crease at the non-striker’s end.
“He’ll be kicking himself,” said Ravi Shastri on air as Gill walked back, missing out on a second hundred in as many Test matches.
India were 307-4 at the time of writing with Jaiswal (142 after having resumed his innings) and Sarfaraz Khan (22) at the crease. They lead by 433.
