Set a target of 231, India lost wickets at regular intervals as they slipped to 107-5. Axar Patel was promoted to No.5, but the move didn’t quite work as he was out for 17.

Jadeja, who top-scored for India in the first innings, came out to bat at No.7 in the second. Starting off against the English spinners, Jadeja found it difficult to get going and was stuck on the crease.

His first 19 balls fetched just two runs. The twentieth ball, an overpitched delivery by Joe Root, was pushed down to mid-on where Ben Stokes had stationed himself.

Jadeja ran with the shot as Stokes attacked the ball. As he picked the ball, Stokes was off-balance and in no position to throw cleanly. Yet, he somehow made a backhand, underarm flick even as he was falling to the ground. There wasn’t the usual force on the throw, yet it was enough to hit the stumps and catch Jadeja well short of his crease.

Jadeja’s was the sixth Indian wicket to fall as England closed in on a famous Test victory on Indian soil.
