As Australia batted first in Adelaide, taking on the pink ball in the second Ashes Test, Labuschagne was into the action early, with Marcus Harris departing for three thanks to a stunning leg-side grab from Jos Buttler. Australia’s incumbent No.3 combined with David Warner to grind down England’s bowlers, reaching the end of the second session with their partnership crossing 100 runs.

Along the way, Ben Stokes kept testing Labuschagne with short-pitched deliveries angled into the body, with the batter doing sufficiently well to counter the bounce on the leg-side. And as usual, most balls that were either left or defended were followed by his customary ‘No run’ call.

Off the last ball of the 36th over, Labuschagne amused viewer with another of his on-field quirks when he ducked under another Ben Stokes bouncer. As soon as the ball passed him, the stump mic caught Labuschagne yelling “Well played, Marnus!”, nodding at the bowler, adjusting his helmet and giving himself a fist-pat on the chest.
