Starc is averaging over 70 with the bat and less than 20 with the ball this series, having started off in spectacular style with the wicket of Rory Burns off its very first ball. Burns has since been dropped by England, and Hameed is in danger of suffering a similar fate, with some pundits calling for him to lose his place for the final Test of the series at Hobart.
PA’s Rory Dollard tweeted that there was “no way whatsoever [Hameed] can play in Hobart”, with the opener having now been dismissed in single figures in five consecutive innings.
Several remarked on the gap between Hameed’s bat and pad that Starc was able to exploit. Sydney Morning Herald’s Andrew Wu tweeted that you “Could have driven an elephant through the gaping hole between Haseeb Hameed’s bat and pad”. Hameed averages 17.58 since his Test recall last summer.
