Labuschagne, the world’s No.1 ranked Test batter, had played an excellent counter-attack to that point, taking Australia from 12-3 to 88-3 in a little more than 12 overs. He had even showed exactly what he was trying to do against Broad before, walking across and whipping Chris Woakes over midwicket in extraordinary fashion.

This time, however, something went awry, with Labuschagne’s front foot giving way, and Broad spotting the opportunity to target the exposed stumps. Labuschagne ended up splayed out on the turf, just as Broad had to start the session, slipping over after bowling the first ball of the game.

Labuschagne’s shot was unusual, but comparisons were made immediately to Ijaz Ahmed, who walked across too far and got in a tangle against Dominic Cork playing for Pakistan in a Test against England.
