The keeper was right in the middle of the action early on in the fourth day. In the third over of the day, Stuart Broad got a nick from Marcus Harris after bowling full, and Buttler sprung to his left to hold on in spectacular fashion. He displayed athleticism reminiscent of his first innings catch off the same batter.

But it was to be a bittersweet few minutes for Buttler and the rest of the side. The very next ball, Broad got an outside edge off the newcomer Steve Smith, only for the gloveman to drop the right-hander.

Earlier in the match Buttler had dropped Marnus Labuschagne on two separate occasions before the Australia No.3 celebrated his sixth Test century.

Buttler was, however, granted a second chance by Smith, who gloved a ball from Ollie Robinson down the leg side to depart for 6, his first single-figure Test score against England since the 2017 Adelaide Ashes Test.
