Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting was on the money while on commentary for Channel 7, outlining how England were going to target Cameron Green just moments before the all-rounder was bowled on day two of the second Ashes Test at Adelaide.

Green came out to bat after Travis Head was bowled by Joe Root to leave Australia on 291-4, and the 22-year-old was under the microscope having fallen for a golden duck in the first Test at the Gabba.

With Ben Stokes bowling, Ponting outlined how England were going to target Green, who had been cleaned up in Brisbane after leaving a delivery from Ollie Robinson.

Just moments before Green, on 2, faced the fifth and final delivery of his knock on Friday, Ponting said: “A very distinct change of tactics now for the new batsman Cam Green – they’ll be a lot fuller and a lot straighter, they’ll target his stumps.

“Have a look at how he sets up in his stance. He sets up with a very open front foot. That’s generally a sign of someone that’s worried about getting LBW, doesn’t want to get their front foot too far across, into the line of his stumps.”

Stokes proceeded to run in and bowl Green with, you guessed it, a full delivery that targeted the stumps, getting the ball to beat the batter’s forward defence. It proved to be a fine call from a World Cup-winning skipper, who won plenty of praise for his analysis.
