Shreyas Iyer celebrates taking the wicket of Mayank Agarwal in the Duleep Trophy 2024.

Shreyas Iyer took a diving catch off his own bowling to dismiss his opposite number Mayank Agarwal in the Duleep Trophy on Friday.

Shreyas' India D side were in action against India A on day two of their second round match in the Duleep Trophy. After bowling out their opposition for 290, India D posted 183 in reply.

Devdutt Padikkal was the lone warrior, with a knock of 92. Shreyas himself batted at No.3, but scored a seven-ball duck, causing a stir as he walked out to bat wearing sunglasses. Harshit Rana also made a contribution of 31 lower down the order.

In their second innings, India A openers Mayank Agarwal and Pratham Singh played with the freedom afforded to them by a 107-run lead. Both players scored half-centuries as the day drew to a close, and Shreyas brought himself on to bowl the final over of the day.

He struck with his very first ball, as Mayank, the opposition captain, mistimed a nudge into the leg side. The ball went straight and low, and Shreyas dived to his right to pull off a superb diving catch and break a 115-run opening stand.

This was just his fifth first-class wicket, and his first since December 2018. Shreyas' previous victims are Quinton de Kock, Keshav Maharaj, Aditya Waghmode and Chetan Sakariya. In all cricket, this was his first since November 2019, when he dismissed Amit Sinha in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Assam.

Shreyas had also caught the eye last month, when he took up the ball in the Buchi Babu invitational tournament and imitated the bowling action of his Kolkata Knight Riders teammate and West Indies star Sunil Narine.
