Yash Dubey was given out by the TV umpire after there were spikes on the UltraEdge despite a visible gap between the bat and ball during the Duleep Trophy

The incident occurred during the 14th over when India D opener Dubey attempted to punch away a back-of-a-length delivery by Aaqib Khan. The ball angled away from the batter, who ended up getting a faint edge as it passed through to the wicketkeeper.

The India A fielders went up in appeal but it was given not out by the on-field umpire. Skipper Mayank Agarwal referred the decision to the third umpire, who, after watching a few replays and seeing a spike on the UltraEdge, ruled the batter out. Dubey, however, was not impressed.

Reruns of the incident suggested there could have been an error, with television commentators discussing the decision at length. Visuals showed the emergence of a spike even before the ball had crossed the bat. As replays were shown, it was clear that at no point the ball seemed to have made contact with the bat, but UltraEdge showed otherwise, with varying lengths of spikes.

The TV umpire Akshay Totre signalled out based on the technology, but Dubey, who was dismissed for a 41-ball 14, was not pleased.

Most recently, Shan Masood was out after an error in the UltraEdge during the Test series against Bangladesh, with the umpires ruling him out despite the spikes emerging after the ball had passed the bat.

India D fell to 44-3 after the dismissal and were soon 52-4 after Sanju Samson was dismissed for five. Thereafter, Devdutt Padikkal and Ricky Bhui began a rebuilding job.
