Prasidh Krishna, Sarafraz Khan and Shreyas Iyer were all flops in the recent Duleep Trophy 2024

Several India players took part in the recent 2024 Duleep Trophy and here’s how they fared.

Hits

Riyan Parag

193 runs @ 32.16, HS: 73
1 wicket @ 22, BBI: 1-1

Parag impressed during his short stays at the crease, batting with a strike rate of 76.58. He showed his versatility, first making a cautious 30 in 64 balls in the first innings of the first game before smashing an 18-ball 31 in the next innings. He adapted well, seen also in his knock of 73 where he started slow after his team lost early wickets before switching gears. He would, however, have liked to convert those starts into bigger scores.

Sanju Samson

196 runs @ 49, HS: 106

Samson, a last-minute selection in the Duleep Trophy, smashed a first-class hundred in over five years, hitting 106 in 101 deliveries. He also crossed 40 on two other occasions.

Devdutt Padikkal

202 runs @ 33.66, HS: 92

Padikkal, who impressed in his lone Test outing against England this year, played a masterful knock of 92 after his side had slipped to 52-4, which soon became 96-6. Padikkal also made 56 and 50 in the tournament and is a favourite to be in the reserves for the series of Australia.

Khaleel Ahmed

9 wickets @ 21.66, BBI: 3-39

Khaleel’s left-arm swing bowling proved tough to score against. Ricky Ponting has stated Khaleel should be on the flight to Australia and the performance in the Duleep Trophy would have left the selectors impressed.

Arshdeep Singh

13 wickets @ 21. BBI: 6-40

Arshdeep had the second-best strike rate among all bowlers with at least 10 wickets in the competition, and his spell of 6-40, where he bowled 11.2 overs in a row, helped bowl out the opposition for 115.

Mukesh Kumar

15 wickets @ 28.60, BBI: 4-98

Though Mukesh picked up plenty of wickets, he was expensive and was the only bowler to pick up 10 wickets and concede four runs an over in the tournament.

Flops

Shreyas Iyer

154 runs @ 25.66, HS: 54

A few rapid cameos followed by low scores, including one where he was set up wonderfully by Khaleel Ahmed. Iyer, who is eyeing a national contract and a return to the Test circuit would have wanted to fare better.

Sarfaraz Khan

71 runs @ 23.66, HS: 46

Sarfaraz was selected for the Bangladesh Test series but was released by the national camp to take part in the second round of the Duleep Trophy. He made a quickfire 46 alongside Rishabh Pant to give a hint of India’s Test future but would have wanted to carry on.

Ishan Kishan

134 runs @ 33.50, HS: 111

Another player who is looking to make a comeback into the national team, Kishan started with a knock of 111 but could only register 1, 5 and 17 thereafter. His hundred came on a flat wicket when runs were to be found in abundance but, when in trouble, Kishan flattered to deceive.

Washington Sundar

114 runs @ 22.80, HS: 87
3 wickets @ 44.66, BBI: 1-7

Sundar did not leave much of an impact with the ball but struck a crucial 87 after his team were reduced to 100-5 while batting at no.7.

Avesh Khan

6 wickets @ 29.16, BBI: 3-64

Avesh was expensive and was inconsistent in patches with the ball. However, he struck a match-winning 51* against India C, helping India A recover from a tricky position.

Prasidh Krishna

4 wickets @ 43, BBI: 3-50

A pacer who was touted to be the next bowling star could not do much in either of the two matches he played.
