Tamim Iqbal suffers chest pain

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal had to be hospitalised during a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League game on March 24, 2025.

Mohammedan Sporting Club captain Tamim had been fielding after Rayan Rafsan Rahman, his Shinepukur Cricket Club counterpart, had won the toss and opted to bat.

Tamim suffered a chest pain during the Shinepukur innings. According to an ESPNCricinfo report, a helicopter was arranged to airlift him to a hospital, but he “could not be flown from” the venue. He was eventually admitted to the Fazilatunnesa Hospital.

A Somoy News report added that Tamim’s illness forced the Bangladesh Cricket Board to postpone a pre-arranged meeting between the administrators.

According to Cricbuzz, Tamim suffered a massive heart attack, with Bangladesh Cricket Board chief physician Debashish Chowdhury being quoted as saying that there were issues detected in the ECG and blood test.

"He complained of having chest pain and was taken to a nearby hospital where he was checked and underwent an ECG," Chowdhury said. "There was a little problem and at times you cannot understand [the condition] immediately."

"In the first blood test, there was a problem," he continued. "He said he was feeling uncomfortable and wanted to go back to Dhaka. An ambulance was called in and when he was returning to the field from the hospital, he felt a pain in his chest again. He was then brought to the hospital for the second time and it seemed he had a massive heart attack. Now he is under observation at Fazilatunnesa Hospital".

Litton Kumar Das, Tamim’s former national teammate, wished him a speedy recovery.

At the match, Shinepukur became 107-7 before Rayan (77) and Shariful Islam (57) lifted them to 223. For Mohammedan Sporting, Taijul Islam returned 3-44, Nasum Ahmed 2-34, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 2-33, and Saifuddin 2-40.

Tamim announced his retirement from international cricket in January this year, despite being asked to reconsider his decision ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy.

"I have been away from international cricket for a long time," he had written on Facebook back then. "That distance will remain. My international cricket chapter is over. I have been thinking about this for a long time. Now that a big tournament like the Champions Trophy is coming up, I do not want to be the focus of anyone's attention, which could lead to the team losing their focus."
