Shoaib Bashir’s struggle for form in the 2025 County Championship continued as he dropped to bottom spot on the Division Two averages chart.
In 2024, Bashir’s 49 Test wickets were the third-most in the world (and the most among spinners). In the 2025 County Championship, however, he has not looked the same bowler for Glamorgan.
In his first Division Two match of the summer, he returned 0-92 in 22 overs at Cardiff. Leicestershire secured a 198-run lead, and romped home to a 10-wicket win inside three days.
Bashir did strike twice in his second game, at Bristol, but his 2-127 in 28.5 overs (the batters were Oliver Price and Graeme van Buuren) was not enough to prevent Gloucestershire from piling on 546. Following on, Glamorgan got away with a draw.
Glamorgan were then bowled out for 199 at Lord’s before Middlesex declared on 470-9. This time Bashir finished with 0-85 from 21 overs. Glamorgan were 186-5 at stumps on day three. They need another 35 to avoid innings defeat. Bashir may get another spell.
However, as things stand now, Bashir has two wickets for 304 runs in the ongoing season. His average, 152, is the worst in Division Two. Just below (or above, depending on the perspective) him is his England teammate Rehan Ahmed (one wicket at 107). However, Rehan has been rapidly establishing himself as an opening batter.
