Matthew Potts appeals for a wicket in the second round of the County Championship

The second round of the 2025 County Championship came to its conclusion today (April 14). Here's what the standings look like for both divisions after two rounds of action.

The most thrilling action of the round came right at the last gasp when Warwickshire clung on for a one-wicket victory over Durham. No.10 Ethan Bamber hit the winning runs with a six carved back over Ben Raine's head in an astonishing finish. Having had Warwickshire 90-5 earlier in the day, Durham saw a probable victory go to a defeat, after Ben McKinney's opening day century got them off to a strong start. The result means Warwickshire sit at the top of the Division One table, while Durham sit in dead last after two losses from their opening two rounds.

Elsewhere in Division One, Yorkshire secured a record-breaking victory over Worcestershire inside three days. Dawid Malan and new captain Jonny Bairstow were at the crease when Yorkshire sealed the win by 504 runs – the biggest win in terms of runs in County Championship history.

Surrey and Hampshire were also involved in a tense match, with Dom Sibley scoring back-to-back centuries in each innings and Sonny Baker taking his maiden first-class five-for. Hampshire were looking for a record chase of 377 at The Oval on day four, but bad light intervened in the evening session with less than a hundred needed for a Hampshire win.

The pick of the games in Division Two was Northants almost manufacturing a win against Lancashire, but not quite having the time for a last-gasp fourth-innings chase on the final day to force a result. Kent also continued their form from the opening round, sealing a second win of the season. That result put Middlesex at the bottom of the Division Two table, a point behind seventh-placed Glamorgan.
