Against Hampshire at The Oval, Dom Sibley followed his first-innings score of 100 not out with 105 in the second innings.
Surrey were bowled out for 253 in the first innings after Hampshire captain Ben Brown won the toss and opted to field. Opening the batting, Sibley carried his bat through the innings, remaining unbeaten on exactly 100 when none of his teammates reached 40 as Brad Wheal returned 4-65.
Sibley became the first Surrey batter to do this since Rory Burns, Sibley’s opening partner and captain in the ongoing match, made an unbeaten 219 out of 483 in 2017, also against Hampshire at The Oval. Sibley has now carried his bat an astonishing six times in first-class cricket. Since the Second World War, only legendary England opener Geoffrey Boycott has done so as often, completing the feat on nine occasions.
Daniel Worrall (3-37) and Jordan Clark (3-54) then earned a 34-run lead for Surrey as Hampshire collapsed from 84-1 to 219. Until this point, Sibley’s hundred was the only score in the match in excess of fifty.
Sibley continued from where he had left off in the first innings, adding 56 with Burns, 100 with Ollie Pope (65), and 108 with Jamie Smith. By the time Liam Dawson snared him, Sibley had spent 226.1 overs on the ground. This time he made 105.
Sibley became the first Surrey batter to score two hundreds in a first-class match since Kumar Sangakkara made 114 and 120 against Middlesex at Lord’s in 2017. Jack Hobbs (112 and 104 in 1927) and Ian Ward (112 and 156 in 2002) are the only Surrey batters to have done this against Hampshire.
The two hundreds took Sibley’s career tally to 24 in the format. Of these, two have come in Test cricket.
Surrey were 282-4 at the time of writing, at tea on day three, with Smith (84) and Dan Lawrence (1) at the crease. They lead by 316 runs.
