Jofra Archer continued his comeback to full fitness, bowling nearly 30 overs for Sussex Second XI against Surrey Second XI, with the highlight undoubtedly a rapid inswinging yorker to remove Nico Reifer lbw.
Reifer, a 20-year-old all-rounder, is yet to make his professional debut. He made his way to 45 before being pinned in front by Archer, though upon seeing the replay, some wondered if the ball, which moved inwards drastically, might have been heading down the leg-side.
Otherwise, it was a game of toil for Archer. He made 35 in the first innings, and went at nearly three-and-a-half runs per over, finishing with figures of 2-102 in 29.2 overs. Still, with Archer short of match time, the fact that he bowled a significant number of overs, seemingly ramping up his pace through the innings, will have pleased the England management.
Archer last played a game in March, at the end of England’s all-formats tour of India. He has since had an injection to manage a recurring elbow injury, while also undergoing surgery on his hand to remove a fragment of glass, having cut himself while washing a fish tank.
The second XI fixture is still ongoing. Sussex claimed a 77-run lead, and are batting in the third innings on the fourth day, with the lead nearing 200.
