Root’s hundred was crucial in the context of the game. Glamorgan had claimed a lead, but slipped to 29-4 in the third innings when he was joined by Chris Cooke. While the partnerships of Cook and Root were fond sights for England fans through the 2010s, it was Cooke and Root who put on a monster stand to aid the side from West of the Anglo-Welsh border, notching an unbeaten double-century partnership to put Glamorgan in the ascendancy.
Both batsmen made hundreds, and the century moment was especially sweet for Root, who tucked his older brother Joe, who also happens to be the England Test captain, for two runs to bring up the milestone. The elder brother could only put his hands on his head as his younger sibling made a hundred against his old club to put the game out of reach.
In a way, this was a less explosive version of yesterday’s IPL game, when the younger Curran brother won the battle between Sam and Tom, and just like yesterday, the family member’s individual triumph wasn’t enough to secure victory. While Joe Root was dismissed for 13, to go with a first-innings score of 16, an Adam Lyth century took Yorkshire to safety.
Still, it’s a game Billy Root will always cherish.
