The Bangladesh Premier League 2024-25 edition has come under the scanner for match-fixing allegations. Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) is probing the matter.

The latest season of BPL has been in the news for players' non-payment of dues and ticketing issues. To add to the list of controversies, match-fixing allegations have now rocked the league.

The ACU is reportedly investigating eight matches for suspected fixing based on anonymous tips and media reports. According to a Daily Star report, out of 10 players who are under BCB's radar, six have played for the national side, two are uncapped and two are overseas players.

The franchises in question are Durbar Rajshahi, Sylhet Strikers, Dhaka Capitals and Chittagong Kings. The fixtures that are under investigation are Fortune Barishal vs Rajshahi (January 6), Rangpur Riders vs Dhaka (January 7), Dhaka vs Sylhet (January 10), Rajshahi vs Dhaka (January 12), Chittagong vs Sylhet (January 13), Barishal vs Khulna Tigers (January 22), Chittagong vs Sylhet (January 22) and Rajshahi vs Rangpur (January 23).

Suspicious incidents in the aforementioned matches include bowlers conceding consecutive wides, deliberately bowling no balls, suspicious team selection and slow batting while chasing totals.

BCB forms independent inquiry body to help probe

The BCB has taken cognisance of the matter, forming an independent body to support its ACU in the investigations.

"As part of its ongoing efforts, the BCB is in the process of establishing an Independent Inquiry Body to further support the ACU in its investigations. The BCB remains dedicated to ensuring a fair and transparent cricketing environment, and will continue to take all necessary actions to safeguard the integrity of the sport in Bangladesh," a BCB press release read.

It added: "The BCB has also come across media coverage regarding potential anti-corruption concerns about the BPL. The Board reiterates its firm commitment to upholding the integrity and spirit of the game.

"The BCB strictly adheres to the ICC Anti-Corruption Code for Participants and maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption in any form. The BCB anti-corruption unit is continuously monitoring all matters relating to integrity within Bangladesh cricket, addressing them with due confidentiality and discretion."

This is not the first time BPL has been hit by spot-fixing. In 2014, former Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful pleaded guilty and was banned for eight years.
