In the first match of the new calendar year, Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Stars faced off at the Gabba in Brisbane, with the visitors winning the toss and electing to field first.

The Stars landed two blows in the Powerplay as Mark Steketee got rid of openers Colin Munro and Tom Banton. Matt Renshaw and Nathan McSweeney followed suit before the 10th over, falling to Joel Paris and Peter Siddle respectively to leave their side 47-4 at the halfway stage.

Max Bryant and Will Prestwidge then steadied the ship from 68-5, taking their side to 106 after 16 overs. Off the first ball of the 17th, Prestwidge went after England international Dan Lawrence, attempting to clear the long-on fence.

The ball appeared to be going comfortably over the rope, but Maxwell sprinted and leapt in the air, taking it one-handed and managing to throw it back into the field of play before hitting the ground.

Nearly five feet outside the rope, he then swiftly moved back into the field of play to complete a stunning effort, and prompted commentator Mark Howard to compare Maxwell's leap to NBA star LeBron James.

The catch was Maxwell's fourth of the innings, a joint-BBL record for the most catches in an innings by a non-wicketkeeper. It also made him the first BBL player to achieve this feat twice, having done so for the Stars against Melbourne Renegades in January 2018. Dan Christian, Alex Doolan and Jack Edwards are the three players to have taken four catches once.
