Matthew Mott, who resigned as England’s white-ball coach following their 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final exit, has taken up a three-year coaching role with Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League.

Former England white-ball coach Matthew Mott has signed a coaching deal with Big Bash League side Sydney Sixers.

After England’s semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup, Matthew Mott stepped down as their white-ball coach halfway through his four-year contract. England’s triumph at the 2022 T20 World Cup will remain the pinnacle of his two-year stint.

Mott also coached England to white-ball series wins against Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, New Zealand and Pakistan. However, a failure to defend the ODI World Cup last year and the subsequent T20 World Cup this year raised questions over his position, leading to his resignation.

In his first assignment since the England coaching role, Mott has been signed by the Sixers as assistant coach under Greg Shipperd for three BBL seasons. The decision came after Cameron White took up a head coach role with the Melbourne Renegades.

A homecoming for Mott

Mott previously served as the head coach of Australian Women between 2015 and 2022, winning the ODI World Cup in 2022 and T20 World Cup in 2018 and 2020. His latest signing brought him to where he had started his coaching journey, with the New South Wales men’s side in 2007.

"I'm delighted to join back up with the Sydney Sixers. Having started my coaching journey in Sydney many years ago, it's a place that evokes both great memories and a comforting sense of familiarity, which I'm looking forward to," Mott told Cricket.com.au.

"The idea of being an assistant to Greg Shipperd, who I have a tremendous amount of respect for, really appealed to me. The Sixers are an exciting team and proven performers over a long period of time, and I can't wait to get back involved."

The Sixers will start their BBL 2024/25 season against the Melbourne Renegades on December 15.
