Mitchell Owen equalled the record for the fastest-ever Big Bash League ton, reaching the landmark in 39 balls during the final today (January 27).
Sydney Thunder took on Hobart Hurricanes in the final of the 14th season of the league. Batting first, Sydney posted 182-7, with the opposition needing a record final chase to win the trophy.
Opening the innings, Owen raced to 25 in his first nine balls after the first two overs of the innings went for 23 and 17. He brought up his fifty in just 16 balls before converting it into triple figures. It was his second T20 hundred, having converted all his fifties into triple digits, having also made a ton earlier in the competition.
His hundred in the final came in just 39 balls, the fastest in the BBL in the last ten years.
Only five batters have taken fewer than 45 balls to score a BBL ton, with Craig Simmons (39), Glenn Maxwell (41), Josh Brown (41) and Luke Wright (47) also making up the top five list.
Overall, he is the joint-28th fastest batter to score a men’s T20 hundred, the list being led by Sahil Chauhan, who smashed a 27-ball ton for Estonia against Cyprus last year.
Led by his knock, the Hurricanes chased down the target in just 14.1 overs. Owen was declared the Player of the Match for his 42-ball 108 that had 11 sixes and six fours. He also ended as the highest run-scorer of the BBL edition, making 452 runs at an average of 45.20 and a strike rate of 203.60.
