Taijul Islam claimed 5-60 as Zimbabwe collapsed in spectacular fashion in the second Test of the two-match series, in Chattogram.
Zimbabwe had already taken an unassailable lead in the two-match Test series with a three-wicket win in Sylhet. In the second Test, too, they looked in control when they reached 177-2 after Craig Ervine won the toss and opted to bat.
After the openers, Brian Bennett and Ben Curran, fell for 21 runs apiece, Nick Welch and Sean Williams took the tourists to 161-2 by tea. After the break, however, Welch looked in discomfort, and walked off with cramps a run later. Nayeem Hasan then removed Williams (67) and Ervine to reduce Zimbabwe to 178-4.
Taijul had bowled Curran early in his spell. He now ran through the lower middle-order. With the score on 200, Taijul bowled one that jagged off the pitch, took Wessly Madhevere’s edge, and Jaker Ali held a sharp catch. Wellington Masakadza missed a ball that landed on a length, held its line, and hit him on the pads: the review did not save him. Richard Ngarava missed the next ball, and it hit the off-stump.
Vincent Masakesa saved the hat-trick, but was run out soon afterwards. Welch returned, only to go for an ambitious swipe off Taijul five balls later and get bowled. The wicket gave Taijul his 16th five-wicket haul, one more than Ravindra Jadeja. Only four left-arm spinners – none of them active – have more five-wicket hauls than Taijul.
