During the Chattogram Test match against Zimbabwe, Mehidy Hasan Miraz became the joint fifth-fastest to do the 2,000 run-200 wicket double in Test cricket.
Mehidy had left a mark in the first Test of the two-match series against Zimbabwe, at Sylhet, taking 10 wickets even as Zimbabwe triumphed by three wickets. In doing this, he became the first Bangladeshi to take three ten-wicket hauls in Test cricket as well as the third from his nation to reach 200 wickets.
Mehidy came into the Chattogram Test match with 1,964 runs. He went wicketless as Taijul Islam (6-60) helped bowl out Zimbabwe for 227, and came to bat at 267-5. Bangladesh quickly became 279-7, but Mehidy batted with the tail to push the total to 444. In the process, he made his second Test hundred, registered a career best of 104, and – before all that – got to 2,000 Test runs.
This was Mehidy’s 53rd Test match, which made him the joint fifth-quickest to the milestone. He took one game fewer than Shakib Al Hasan, the only other Bangladeshi to belong to this exclusive group of 26 Test cricketers at the time of writing. Among active cricketers, Ben Stokes, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mitchell Starc are the only others to have done this double (assuming Shakib shall not play another Test match).
