In the first Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh, at Mirpur, Kyle Verreynne joined the small list of touring wicketkeepers with Test hundreds in Bangladesh.
Verreynne came to bat with the Test match in the balance at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur: having bowled out Bangladesh for 106, South Africa were reeling at 99-5, which soon became 108-6.
Wiaan Mulder joined Verreynne at this point, and the pair pushed South Africa to 140-6 by stumps. On the second morning, they stretched that to 227 before Hasan Mahmud dismissed Mulder (54) and Keshav Maharaj with consecutive balls. Verreynne continued, adding 66 with Dane Piedt (32), and was eventually last out, stumped off Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
By then, he had made 114, the 10th Test hundred by a touring wicketkeeper in Bangladesh. While Lorcan Tucker got 108 in 2023, the one before that was back in 2014/15, by Regis Chakabva. The last wicketkeeper to score a hundred bigger than Verreynne’s 114 was Denesh Ramdin, who had made 126 not out in 2012/13.
The list includes some illustrious names. Three of the first four entries, in chronological order, are of Andy Flower, Brendon McCullum, and Adam Gilchrist. Tatenda Taibu’s 153 in 2004/05 remains the highest Test score by a visiting gloveman in Bangladesh.
Verreynne also made the fifth Test hundred by a South African in Bangladesh. Of the five, he is the only one to be dismissed without scoring a double hundred. He had come into the Test series with a Test average of 27.65, which shot up to 30.85 over the course of one innings.
South Africa eventually made 308. At the time of writing, Bangladesh were 21-2, and needed another 181 to avoid innings defeat.
