There are significant off-field distractions ongoing for Bangladesh, who won their most recent Test series in Pakistan. This series will be their first under new head coach Phil Simmons, who took over from Chandika Hathurusinghe who was sacked earlier this week after allegedly assaulting a player during the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Shakib Al Hasan has also withdrawn from the series, having not returned to Dhaka where there are political protests against him.
South Africa also have problems ahead of the first Test. Captain Temba Bavuma was ruled out of the game 10 days before its start with a muscle strain in his left tricep, while Nandre Burger was also ruled out. Aiden Markram will lead the side in Bavuma's absence, while Dewald Brevis and Lungi Ngidi have been added to the squad.
South Africa last played a Test match in August, when they won a two-match series in the Caribbean 1-0. Following the first Test in Dhaka, the series will move on to Chattogram where the second Test will be begin on October 29.
