Watch: Mehidy Hasan found himself at the centre of an awkward fielding moment when, standing at backward point, he lost sight of a shot as the ball flew towards him, copping a blow as the ball clanged straight into his stomach.
It was a fresh new ball that came his way, the second delivery of South Africa’s second innings of the Port Elizabeth Test. Stationed at backward point as Ebadot Hossain came in to bowl to Sarel Erwee, Mehidy Hasan stood motionless after Erwee cracked a full-blooded cut shot towards him.
He appeared to have not seen the trajectory of the ball at all, possibly losing it in the St George’s Park stands behind while he looked to his left, only to be caught unawares as the ball pinged into his upper stomach, the impact folding him to the ground.
Mehidy was in visible pain, and was taken off the field with the help of a stretcher.
By the end of the fourth over, he was welcomed back by his teammates on the pitch, and even got a little fist-bump from Dean Elgar. A couple of overs later, his off-breaks were pressed into action, signalling that all was well.
