It was a game that had been enthralling throughout, with Devika Vaidya hitting a four off the final ball of India’s 20 overs against Megan Schutt to take the game to the Super Over.
Heading into the Super Over, Richa Ghosh hit the first ball from Heather Graham’s for six, but was dismissed the next ball. Smriti Mandhana took over proceedings as she scored 13 runs off three balls to take India to set Australia a mammoth score of 21 to win from their six balls.
Renuka Singh Thakur took the responsibility of defending the target, bowling to Alyssa Healy and Ash Gardner.
The first ball went for four, before only two runs and a wicket would come off the next three balls to all but ensure an India victory. Healy struck a four and a six off the last two balls, but it was too little too late.
Incredibly, it was Australia’s first defeat of the year (records still show it as a tie) as they had managed to almost go the entirety of 2022 unbeaten.
India’s win levelled the five-match series one apiece. The remaining three matches will played at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai.
