In front of a packed crowd at DY Patil Stadium with over 45,000 in attendance, the spectators were treated to a fantastic spectacle with an enthralling finish. India would go on to claim victory, levelling the five-match series at one-all and inflicting Australia’s first defeat of 2022.
Australia had earlier posted 187-1 thanks to half-centuries from Beth Mooney and Tahlia McGrath.
In reply, Smriti Mandhana scored a 49-ball 79 before she was bowled by Annabel Sutherland. Her wicket left India behind the eight-ball as they required 30 runs in 21 balls, by no means an insurmountable total, but they stalled in their chase as only 16 runs would come from the next 15 deliveries.
The result was that Richa Ghosh and Devika Vaidya required 14 off the last over to win and bring an end to Australia’s unbeaten streak in 2022.
A single off the first ball would take the equation to 13 needed off 5 before Vaidya got a thick edge that flew for four. A single, followed by a two, followed by another single, left India needing five off the last ball with Vaidya again on strike. The left-hander managed to slice a wide delivery past backward point and away for four.
Vaidya, who started the over on 2 off 2, finished on 11 off 5 and as India’s star as they would go on to claim victory in the Super Over.
