Australia slumped to their worst-ever home defeat, losing to Pakistan in the second ODI at Adelaide by nine wickets on Friday (November 8).

The hosts, who had taken a 1-0 lead in the first ODI, were sent in to bat first in the second game. The decision turned out to be the right one for Pakistan as Australia were reduced to 87-4, which soon became 129-7 before the opposition were bundled out for 163.

Steve Smith top-scored with 35, with no other batter making more than 20 runs in the innings. Haris Rauf was the star for Pakistan, grabbing 5-29 in his eight overs. In reply, Pakistan’s openers never let the bowlers make inroads, as Saim Ayub (82 in 71) and Abdullah Shafique (64 in 69) stitched together 137 runs for the first wicket in just 20.1 overs.

There were no further hiccups as Pakistan won the game six overs later, recording just their second win against the hosts in Australia in the last 19 years.

It was the worst-ever home loss for Australia while batting first, losing the game by nine wickets and 141 balls to spare. They have suffered nine-wicket losses at home three other times - the last dating back to 1992 - when West Indies won with 69 balls remaining.

The only other times they have lost by nine wickets were against South Africa (1992) and the West Indies (1984). While the former was with 13 balls to spare, the latter was with 17 deliveries remaining.

Fielding first, the worst defeat Australia have suffered in a home ODI is by 206 runs against New Zealand in 1986

The third ODI between the two teams will be played on Sunday in Perth.
