Pakistan imploded dramatically in a rain-affected T20I against Australia, losing half their side for 16, and eventually falling short by 29 runs in Brisbane.
After rain and thunderstorms delayed the toss, Pakistan opted to bowl first with the match shortened to seven-overs-a-side, and two overs of powerplay. Maxwell led the show, reverse-sweeping Naseem Shah for four off his first ball en route to a 19-ball 43. Helped by a seven-ball 21 from Marcus Stoinis, they managed 93-4.
Abbas Afridi was the pick of the bowlers, picking up two wickets from his solitary over and giving nine runs.
Pakistan's top-order was blown away spectacularly: from 8-0, they slipped to 16-5, and then 24-6. Xavier Bartlett and Nathan Ellis finished with three wickets apiece. Rizwan succumbed to a two-ball duck in his first game as full-time T20I captain.
Record low for Pakistan
At 16-5, it was the sixth-lowest score at which a Full-Member team lost five wickets in a T20I game. The lowest remains 9-5 for South Africa, against India in a 2022 T20I. 16 is also Pakistan's lowest-ever socre at which they have lost their fifth wicket.
At one point, it felt like Pakistan might break Rwanda's record for the least deliveries to be all out (37), but they eventually lasted the entire seven overs, finishing on 64-9.
Afridi and Haseebullah Khan combined to save Pakistan the blushes, putting together 23 runs in two overs to keep them in the game. Afridi continued after Haseebullah's departure in the sixth over, finishing with 20 off 10, one of only three Pakistan players to get into double-digits.
At the end of the game, Rizwan said his team struggled to keep up with the pace of the game. "It was difficult to keep things normal in a seven-over game. Got to give credit to Maxwell. His style worked really well," he said.
