Australia captain Pat Cummins smiles after his side's victory over India at Adelaide

Australia climbed to the top spot in the World Test Championship standings after beating India by 10 wickets in the Adelaide pink ball Test to level the series 1-1. India dropped to third in the standings.

Australia bounced back with a convincing victory in the Adelaide pink-ball Test to nullify India’s lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. A 10-wicket victory over India allowed the climb back up to the top of the ICC World Test Championship table.

Despite struggling to negotiate with the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jasprit Bumrah and Virat Kohli and losing the series opener in Perth by 295 runs, Australia bounced back in style. Bowling with the pink ball, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins struck five-fors in the first and second innings respectively. Sandwiched between them was a Travis Head century as India were played off of the park in both the batting and bowling departments.

The return of captain Rohit Sharma and his middle-order experimentation didn’t seem to work in Adelaide. Besides Nitish Kumar Reddy’s resilient knocks and Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance every now and then, there were few positives to take away for the visitors from this match.

This was India’s sixth loss in the 2023-25 cycle and their fourth defeat in the last five matches. As a result, Rohit Sharma’s side has slipped to third in the table with 110 points and 57.29 PCT. Australia lead the charts with 60.71 PCT after registering their ninth win in Adelaide.

South Africa, with 59.26 PCT, separate the two sides and occupy second place in the standings.

While India are still involved in the qualification mix, they need to win all the remaining matches in order to gauarantee their spot in the WTC final. Any further failures will mean that India need to depend on South Africa and Sri Lanka losing games in order to qualify.
